Fact: Even in the middle of the desert, you will r Fact: Even in the middle of the desert, you will run into your friends! More on that later…

After our time along California’s 395, we decided to stray from our usual route down to Lone Pine and cut over to Nevada at Bishop via Benton Crossing Road. We like to see new places and explore new roads…. and this was a pretty drive. We passed several hot springs, Lake Crowley, and beautiful snow-capped peaks. Our brakes didn’t like this road but atleast we didn’t have to drive up the 7-12% grade!

Our first stop was Tonopah along Interstate 95, where we finally got to see the Clown Motel and its neighboring historic cemetery. Chad was a professional clown for 10 years and always brings his juggling pins on the road with us! Afterwards we made it to Goldfield, a tiny artist community full of quirky roadside attractions. We made sure to drop by the International Car Forest of the Last Church and the Art Cars downtown.

We parked nearby at a local hot spring and set up camp in an odd graded area with an island that had an old truck ontop. Within minutes of setting up camp, a mysterious white van descended into our “hole”. Low and behold, it was our friend Annie, who spotted our trailer from the road. Who woulda thunk we’d meet a friend in the middle of BFE Nevada?!? Annie had hosted us years ago at her property in Paso Robles before relocating to Southern Oregon, and we have since done roadtrips and camping trips together. Her furbaby, @maggiemayadventuredog and Frankie explored camp while we caught the sunset. The next morning, we woke up for sunrise and had the hot springs all to ourselves as wild horses and burros grazed along the horizon.
Have ya Herd?!? One of the best things about the Have ya Herd?!?

One of the best things about the desert are the quirky people that call it home. You won’t happen upon this kinda stuff in Suburbia. Goldfields, Nevada is no exception. Located near downtown and right off US-95, @carforestofthelastchurch is an open air art installation built alongside the tailings of one of the world’s greatest gold camps. Part Cadillac Ranch, part East Jesus, this quirky roadside attraction was the brainchild of Mark Rippie and friends. Take a self-guided tour around this 40+ car forest. Free but donations accepted.
